Trend Spotting | Mixed PrintsSunday, July 25, 2010
It's been quite a few weeks since we've kicked it old school so please pardon the interruption guys. Today's vintage editorial showcases the ABC's of artfully mixing prints for our modern gal on the go. Photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia in July 2003, these lovely ladies prove that focused trends gain fashion permanence with just a little preparation and a whole lotta panache.
A: Start with a similar color palette for your ensemble: Monochromatic, jewel tones, nudes, primary colors, complementary colors...you get the idea.
B: Warm temperatures call for layering light and airy fabrics: bust out the silk, chiffon, and lace for summer style and grace.
C: Mix graphics with florals, organic with abstract, large patterns with small patterns, polka dots with stripes. Opposing prints makes for the most compositionally interesting looks.
Start with the ABC's, throw in a little personality, et voila!
You'll be runway (or street) worthy even before you slip on those rainbow tights (I'd pass, go au naturale) and pointy-toed pumps (making a comeback this fall)!
