Food Porn Friday | Son of a Gun | Los Angeles

Friday, March 18, 2011

Heralded as one of the hautest and highly anticipated restaurants to recently debut in WeHo, Food and Wine's Best New Chefs (2009) Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo have really hit the seafood spot this time with Son of a Gun, one of THE most memorable dinners I've experienced in a long, long time.

Having only been open to the public a few weeks now, Angelenos have been lining up to sample some of the most sumptuous offerings from under the sea, with bookings well into summer and celebs equally clamoring for much coveted dining spots.

Thank goodness they've got a communal first come, first served banquet-style table reserved for those of us simply willing to wait it out to see what all the fuss is about. Let's just cut straight to the porn shall we?...

Mussels, tarragon, pernod, fennel, and toast: Creamy goodness all wrapped up in a bowl made from LOVE...fresh and focused, tastes like the first day of spring with fresh herbs enveloping sweet little mussels straight from the sea. Perfectly portioned, perfectly seasoned.

Lobster roll, celery, lemon aioli: I'm allergic to lobster but the boy said creamy, too much bread, liked it. Can you tell that's his critique and not mine? :D His side note: The chips and filling would have sufficed, low-carb style.

Smoked steelhead roe, maple cream, pumpernickel: MY LAST DYING DISH. I'm not saying anymore...don't want to spoil the most AMAZING surprise. MUST EAT.

Shrimp toast sandwich, herbs, sriracha mayo: Perfect portions means you can pretty much split everything on the menu and have another go 'round at your faves...This was one of 'em. Succulent shrimp patty with juicy goodness spilling all over with every bite. Average approximation: 1/2 sandwich= 3 bites slowly savoured until the last piece of salad was still stuck in my teeth. Was trying to save it for later ya know...

Santa Barbara Spot Prawn, Butter, Lemon: Small, juicy, unseasoned. It's no boiling crab shrimp so expect nothing more. Just ok, but fresh nonetheless so no complaints here.

Striped Bass, Pho Fumet, Herbs, Lime, Bok Choy: Yup, you read that right...Homeboys straight up serve "Pho" on the menu...we couldn't resist. Heavy handed on the salt but such an interesting take on fish and pho. Vietnamese herbs, check! Chinese veggies, check! Citrus and spice, check! Fresh catch of the day, check, check! Altogether quite an impressive bowl of an all too familiar dish made more unique with the blend of aromatic spices and farmer's market fresh produce. The boy lalalaLOVED this dish...A+ for effort, tiny misstep on the saltiness.

Smoked Mahi Fish Dip, celery, radish, crackers: Like something you'd serve at a fancy superbowl party. Except I'm sure much more expensive to catch, prepare, and eventually present. That is if it can make it past the kitchen without everyone picking at it from every which way. I swear the best flavors come out of the most simple dishes. Nothing groundbreaking, but the fish was just cooked so perfectly. Loved it.

22-seater right in the middle of this 55 capacity restaurant...for walk-ins only. You're basically sitting next to a bunch of strangers, eating well, and joined by your love for good food. Newbies take note!!! Food first, flash second. CANNOT wait to come back!
