Scenes from My Midsummer Night's Birthday Celebration

Monday, July 16, 2012

Holymoly I’m sooooo glad that’s over!
Between crazy work deadlines, blogging, and daily domestic responsibilities, I managed to carve out a mere 2 days to transform my backyard into a birthday bash fit for a party of 30+ peeps. Sometimes the best ideas come when you’ve got the shortest amount of time to execute them.

One tried-and-true tip:
Utilize everything you've already got in the home and maybe tweak a thing or two. It's called "upcycling" y'all and here’s how you do it:

From last week's outdoor posts: Set a large mirror against a wall to maximize the scale of the space. Here, I used an old sliding mirror closet door and flipped it on its side to create this glowing vignette. The mirror reflects the overhead string lights as well as backyard foliage...no matter where you look, there's instant ambience with very little effort!

Spray paint boring old white plastic benches a bright, bold color to offset the concrete floors and stucco walls. I already had some existing orange fabric and knew I wanted a contrasting hue to make the space really pop. Home Depot carries these babies for $4 a can and YES, they adhere to plastic like a dream!

Outdoor fabric fashioned into a DIY table runner...Love mixing prints like damask and animal for a look that's traditional with a touch of the exotic.

Utilize plants that are growing in your yard to style a table. I found these gorgeous full succulents that pick up the greens in the runner as well! Like it was designed that way...love it when that happens, don't you? Also mixing metals in any grouping is the modern way to accessorize. Be it in dress, design, or decor, don't just pair gold with gold, silver with silver. Matchy-matchy went out with 80's power suits honey...Trust!

For this vignette I ransacked my studio and grabbed whatever would work outside. A pair of indoor ottomans for extra seating...some tealights and votives for added warmth and glow...and of course hand-picked hydrangeas from my yard for some additional pops of color.

Visited my local thrift store and totally scored on this slightly used (really, almost brand-new) peacock chair for $30! A birthday present to myself :D Isn't she a beaut?! Can't wait to spray paint her a neon pink color and adorn the heck outta that high back! Will DIY a future post of course :D

{Birthday ensemble: Thrifted maxi-dress from Crossroads trading, vintage tribal necklace from the Long Beach Flea (notice the mixed metals), yellow neon sandals from Target}

I purchased an outdoor canopy from Big Lots to create this setting. Removed the cheapy canopy top, strung a myriad of lights on the frame, and draped the corners with gauzy fabric to soften up the look. Instant party in a box! I should really start packaging this design :D

My gorgeous eatable birthday bouquet from the talented Taylor of Taylor Cake Creations fame! Yup, that's ALL cupcakes you see here! She's sooooo amazingly skilled, we're very lucky to call her one of our own! Thanks soooooo much for this booboo, too bad I went down for the count before I could taste it! Arggghhh!

Of course the obligatory birthday toast! Love my peeps!

After a long hard day of planning and prepping, it's nice to just kick up your pedicured feet and unwind with a cocktail...or two ;D It IS my birthday after all...

Just wanted to thank all my Skittle-wittles for joining me in the JK All Day Birthday celebration, my boys for keeping the spirit alive, and of course my boo for making sure everything went off without a hitch!

Such a bomb-diggity birthday bash, but so glad it's DUNZO!
I'm pooped y'all and that was just the beginning!

Happy Monday y'all!
Cheers to the start of an amazing new week!
