Food Porn Friday | Eat Chow | Costa Mesa

Brunch has ALWAYS been my favorite meal of the day. What’s better than noshing on greasy griddle faves, sippin’ on bottomless champeezy, while gossiping with a group of your gorgeous girlfriends under the warmth of the SoCal sun? I swear nothing beats a morning spread of eggs, bacon, French toast, burgers, carbs and melted cheese!

YES, burgers for brunch! Oman the ONLY time I allow myself a fatty feast since it’s my once-a-week cheat meal. Best to consume all the calories before noon gals, that way you’ll have the ENTIRE day to burn those babies off! As the wise Carrie Bradshaw once wrote…Who says shopping doesn’t count as cardio?!!

Lemon Mascarpone French Toast (above) with almond encrusted baguette, mascarpone cheese, fresh lemon curd, fresh berries, and sweet red wine gastrique. This is precisely why I love brunch: dessert served as a meal. Super-duper sweet…too sweet if you ask me. I half expected something tart and tangy since this dish derived from lemons but mixed with the sweet mascarpone it shot right up the sugar factor. But a beautifully bright and fragrant dish, nonetheless.

Chow Benedict with two poached eggs, toasted country French bread, smoked ham, avocado and hollandaise sauce. I believe that the mark of a great brunch spot has everything to do with their hollandaise and nothing to do with their bagels/baguettes/bacon/or butter. I consider Chow’s sauce a VERY SoCal twist on the traditionally smooth and creamy fatty emulsion of egg yolk and butter since it was runnier than rich and wayyyy lighter than heavy. You get the fat from the fresh avocado slices, but all-in-all still a little bland. I’d pass on this one if you're expecting traditional Benedict.

Shrimp and Grits made with two eggs sunnyside up, spicy creole prawns, Andouille sausage, chorizo cheddar cheese grits, garlic, tomatoes, red bell pepper, parmesan, green onion, smoky pepper crème fraîche. If you’re thinking down-home southern fried shrimp and grits you’re on the wrong coast honey. Think Mexi-Cali…light and layered, a beautiful blend of Cajun spices hitting your palate one note after another. This dish is best eaten by the forkful. Break it up and you’ve truly missed the entire point of creating an ensemble cast, not merely a mish-mash of singular components.

The “a.m.” Burger made with beef patty, fried medium egg, crispy onions, cheddar cheese, hollandaise sauce, applewood smoked bacon, chipotle aioli, tomato, and avocado with breakfast potatoes. I don’t think it’s possible to peep this pic and not automatically start salivating like one of Pavlov’s dogs. I mean LookAtHer! They had me at fried shallots man. You can take the girl outta Bolsa, but you can never take Bolsa outta the girl! *Total Vietnamese reference, some of y’all will know EXACTLY what I’m talkin’ about*

Gruyère and Bacon Stuffed French Toast. Ahhhh, la pièce de résistance:
Cheese, Bacon, Powdered Sugar…Need I say more? If I died tomorrow and devoured this as my last meal, I’d leave this place one satiated, slap-happy gal. This plate is friggin’ GENIUS; Combines ALL the ingredients I lalalallalLOVE into a breakfast-style grilled cheese sandwich. The sugary syrup mixed with savory bacon is the stuff dreams were made of y’all. I couldn’t put the fork down as I found myself involuntarily, almost magnetically drawn to its gooey goodness. Safe to say this plate didn’t last as long as the sweet lemon one did. A surefire HIT...NOT to be missed!

*Insider’s tip: I’ve dined at Eat Chow's Costa Mesa location quite a few times and each time their “specials” menu rotates on a whim. Brunch is clearly my fave but I hear that lunch and dinner’s got some pretty festive tapas-style small plates to share. Perfect for group-dining when you’ve got reason to celebrate with the beach just a few blocks away. Make it an outing and finish the night with a bonfire at nearby Balboa or take a leisurely stroll down the block to window-shop all the trendy boutiques. Nothing beats summer in SoCal baby!*

Bon appétit my beauties!
Hope it's gorgeous and sunny wherever you are!

  10. Oh my gosh, I'm sooo glad that I'm not the only person who does once a week cheat meals!! I too eat clean all week, then splurge on Saturday nights when my parents eat dinner... and some dessert for me, too, of course. ;)

haha but really that makes me happy that I'm not the only one--some people think it's so weird, but it's totally not!

Anyway, this looks delicious and totally like something I would splurge on. Cheese? Eggs? Onion? Oh yes.
