Food Porn Friday | Umami Burger | Costa Mesa

I am by no means a burger and fries kinda gal. But slap some aged truffle, stinky bleu cheese, and caramelized onions on that baby and all of a sudden I’m writhing atop a Phantom Rolls Royce, bikini-clad with ketchup dripping from my chin doing my very best Paris Hilton impersonation. Oh yes honey, that’s exactly how I felt with my first bite into the juicy goodness that is their namesake Umami Burger. We were able to sample at least half the menu with our large party but somehow only the Umami one stuck. Here’s why:

Umami Burger (above): shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, parmesan crisp, and umami ketchup. They had me at the parmesan crisp. If they presented all of their burgers with this option, the selections would be sensational! Such a brilliantly crispy touch to break up the mushy monotony of the combined textures. You’ve got soft bun, soft beef, soft ‘shrooms then BAM!...Crunchtastic-City. Best if devoured almost immediately to save the cheese from an epic fail. My FAVE of the bunch by far!

Tandoori Burger: Shelton farms chicken tandoori curry patty, black beluga, lentil spread and a cucumber herb tzatziki salad. The tzatziki salad is mildly authentic, saved by the salty beluga if you ask me. The chicken seems to have been beaten up pretty badly to transform into this super-dense patty. I wished they would have left a breast bare and seasoned with spices instead. The flavor’s halfway there, but since the meat was so tough I couldn’t take a second bite. Pass!

Port and Stilton Burger: Blue cheese and port caramelized onions. If you’ve ever tasted Whole Food’s Market fresh house-made bleu cheese patties, this DOES NOT come remotely close to what bleu cheese should taste like. I look at your average burger babe to know a thing or two about burgers. If it promises blue cheese, I expect blue cheese. Not just any ol’ cheese that’s been aged a day, or five in that case. The heat-filled air wafted more port fumes than the burger did. Eh, another pass!

Truffle Burger: house-made truffle cheese, truffle glaze. Gosh, can’t a gal get some flava up in this joint? Like the port and blue cheese, where’s my truffle mang??? Sooooooo bland I almost had to douse it in condiments to pass the taste-test. Next!

The Greenbird: Shelton farms natural turkey, crushed avocado, green cheese, butter lettuce, and sprouts. What SoCal would totally taste like in burger form. Summer fresh, cool as a cucumber, and loaded with vitamin-rich, nutritionally beneficial super foods. Almost makes you forget the 1000 cal carb count it comes with, eh?

Double fried creamer “smushed” potatoes- EXCELLENT smeared with a diablo/Dijon spread. Mix the two together, add a dollop of aioli and it’s ON!

Fries and more fries!

Truffled Beet Salad: truffled ricotta, smoked almonds, wild baby arugula, truffle dressing. Now that I’m a bonafide beet eater (thanks BOL!) I can honestly appreciate the subtleties of the veggie when paired with perennial faves like cheese and more truffle! Light and refreshing, tastes JUST like it looks…Yummy!

House pickled veggie platter with pickled beets, cucumbers, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, kimchi, cauliflower, peppers, okra, and more. That kimchi alone is TO.DIE.FOR. My sis-in-law is Korean and even her mama don’t make homemade kimchi that succulent and delish! Such a novel concept to serve in a burger joint, I think this plate alone could be their claim-to-fame except most diners I dish with totally missed this side order on the menu. What Umami should do is offer the disparate elements as separate sides with $2 added to each burger order. Guests get the option, they get to mark-up, so simple, no?

*Insider’s tip: DEFINITELY order the house pickles no matter what burgers you’re sampling as well as EVERY single condiment on the menu. Mix and match to design your own burger and I swear Umami’s house blends will become crave-worthy faves in no time. My fave combo is the Umami Burger smeared with diablo, garlic aioli, and topped with a layer of kimchi. You lose the crunch of the parmesan crisp but gain the flavor back tenfold. Better yet, ask for the crisp on a side and savor it true to every bite.*

TGIF y’all!
How will you make it a delectable weekend???
