Food Porn Friday- Bolsa by the Bowl

Happy Friiiiiiiiiiiday dolls!  It’s been a minute since we visited the mean streets of Westminster for some of the tastiest Vietnamese dishes outside of Saigon!  Living in Orange County certainly has its perks, namely homemade noodles like yo’ mama and her mama used to make!  Except now they’re too busy shopping South Coast Plaza on weekends to make time for you and the sibs.  Mind you, you are a FULL grown adult now so get in the car, strap on them seatbelts, and beware of those Asians ‘cuz we’re cruising down Bolsa today honey!

I love that this eatery is located adjacent to Bolsa on Brookhurst and Edinger so you don’t necessarily have to deal with all that mad traffic just for some tasty eats.  My FAVE bowl of noodles is their hủ tiếu Mỹ Tho with clear rice noodles.  Fresh and fragrant broth allows the accoutrements to simmer undisturbed since the thin slices of pork and ribs have been cooked in this subtly sweet soup.  Boiled shrimp, liver, quail eggs add to the mix garnished with their signature fried shrimp wonton for crunchy texture.  They offer a plate of leafy chrysanthemum garland herbs “tần ô” that I roughly strip and spread atop the soup for a slightly sweet, bitter, but overall super fresh flavor.  Half a lime, tons of hoisin/sriracha/sate mix with a dollop of hot Chinese mustard and I’m in noodle heaven baby.  I like to call this bowl the hangover’s instant cure.  Divine.

This restaurant/food togo shop features cuisine of the Huế region in Central Vietnam.  Named after the Perfume River that separates the North and the South, Huế dishes are an amalgamation of endless flavors, spices, preparation, and presentation.  This was the primary site of the Imperial Nguyen dynasty after all so you know they be eatin’ good in the hood.  Hương Giang is famous for their bún bò Huế, but I’m completely partial to their incredible Mì Quảng with turmeric infused rice noodles.  Their proteins feature cooked shrimp, sautéed pork, steamed pork sausage chã, and a homemade shrimp paste that adds to the rich, robust flavors of the light broth.  I love this specialty as a lunch dish since it’s light enough to feel satiated but heavy enough to sustain me until dinner.  Plus they even pre-prep my meal with loads of fresh veggies so it’s one less ingredient for me to assemble before devouring this sucker down.

Viễn Đông is another Huế-style restaurant located on Brookhurst and Hazard next door to Café Artist.  Their signature noodle bowl is bún riêu ôć made with thin rice noodles, escargot, fried tofu, and a tomato-soup base.  Ever since Café Picasso changed ownership a couple of months ago I’ve been trying to find a comparable spot to get my riêu on and unfortunately have missed the mark on many-a-ventures.  VD’s bún riêu is a more traditional take than I prefer; however look at the size of this thing.  They LOAD it up with chitlins and while the missing fried shallots is my FAVE garnish to this otherwise solid B+ bowl, I’d say theirs tastes the most homemade out of all the thousands of restaurants in Bolsa that also serve this.  I’d be remiss not to mention that service is stellar at this venue, seriously unheard of in these parts of Vietnam, err I mean Orange County.
