Food Porn Friday | The Strand House | Manhattan Beach

Happy Friday luvahs!!!
It’s been birthday after birthday, gathering with my girls and eating up a storm all over SoCal.  I love that we make an effort to not only celebrate in style, but to find new and notable restaurants with a little more to them than just fine dining.  Caitlin’s birthday took us down to the Strand House in Manhattan Beach, where libations overflowed into beautiful ocean views and dinner took us right into after hours dancing.
Here’s what’s on the menu today:

Chef’s selection of fresh oysters.  Seafood consumed in the salty sea air.  Doesn’t get more apropos than that my loves.  Always fancy a good cold starter before a carb-laden meal.

Hand torn pasta rags with lamb sausage, roasted fennel, tomato, and pine nuts.  So savory and delish! The pasta rags were cooked perfectly al dente and the lamb sausage was a balanced mix of chewy and tender. One bite is enough to get the gist of the dish, since I needed to save my stomach to try everything else!

Hamachi crudo with avocado, tomato seed vinaigrette, Red Alaea sea salt. Very refreshing. My only complaint would be that the avocado to crudo ratio was a bit overwhelming as you can see the big thick slices of avocado clearly beating the meat. But SoCal sure does love their avocados so I’m sure people go goo-goo ga-ga over this.

California avocado with Pinkerton avocado, local butter lettuces, fennel, citrus yuzu-mango vinaigrette.  Fantastic! One of my favorite salads ever with a bit of zesty pink grapefruit added to the mix.  I love the slight salted spice of the yuzu balanced with the creamy avocado.  Now this is what I call California on a plate!

Charcuterie + Cheese served with wood fired rustic country white bread, fruit & nut bread, frisee, and pickled vegetables.  Generous servings made us very happy gals.

Wood fired pizza: Pepperoni, Prosciutto, and Tarte flambee.   My fave of the 3 would be the Tarte flambee with sweet onions, smoked bacon, Gruyere, crème fraiche, and ricotta.  I am THE cheese gal favoring a simple cheese pizza over all the fancy toppings, but something about the sweetness of the onions and the savory goodness of the smoked bacon that pair perfectly together.  But sometimes you need a little veggie with your carbs so the Prosciutto with burrata and arugula would be my 2nd pick.

Hand cut fries with house blanched Russet potatoes in beef tallow, served with garlic aioli, roasted tomato ketchup.  I’m a bit divided on this one, honestly.  While I do love my fries deep fried in duck fat (yummmm), the taste of them being deep fried in beef fat takes on a whole ‘notha identity guys.  You know how sometimes you can taste when something is deep fried in old oil?  This had a similar feeling and even the roasted house ketchup couldn’t save these fries, it was so loose and runny.  Ask for regular ol’ Heinz ketchup and you can thank me later.

Strand house mac n cheese.  OMG a complete disaster.  Totally undercooked.  By like 3 minutes.  Pass!

Wood fired Brussel sprouts with black garlic aioli.  Everyone and their mamas has Brussel sprouts on their menu now and this one was nothing special.  Although we always order it anyways, lol.

Prairie Fresh ‘prime’ pork chop with crispy semolina gnocchi, Brussel sprouts, almond polenta, smoked cherry gastrique.  Love the pairing of sweet cherries and smoky pork, just a balance of flavors that sits well with my ever-changing palate.  Pork was cooked perfectly and the veggie ratio was good.  I typically like a LOT of veggies with my protein but I guess that’s what the sides are for right?

The Strand House is such a cute multi-level spot with dining taking up the upper 2 levels and a basement bar for after-hours dancing.  Although the music is horrendous (think bad 90’s mixed with KIIS FM traffic mix) you can easily mosey on down to the neighboring lounges if bar-hopping Manhattan Beach Boulevard's your thing.

But be forewarned, the beach crowd, any beach crowd for that matter, is VERY casual.  Like that ever stopped us from dressing to the nines for Girl’s Night Out! But you catch my drift yeah? ;D

Bon Appétit mes amis!
