Casual Work Wear for Creative Types

Thursday, March 16, 2017

It all starts with a great pair of trousers. Add a high fashion dose of black and you’re well on your way to my tried-and-true uniform. Complete the look with designer shades, attitude for days, and the clients will be clamoring for your expertise before you even bust out your business card guys…

You’ve all heard the saying “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have”….

Well that saying definitely rings true for the creative industry.  I’ve been in the interior design business for over 10 years now and the first thing clients look to is my personal style.

First Impressions

Am I put together? Is the look finished? Do I possess an air of knowledge?
Simply put: Does it look like I know what I’m doing?

If your answer is a resounding “YES” to all of the above, then you know you’ve got a consistent look that you can rely on when meeting new clients and potential business leads.  Especially for the initial introduction when first impressions mean EVERYTHING.

Elevate Basics

I like to jazz up basic black with cool details and current trends.  Nothing like lacy lingerie looks for daytime or a classic knit with a lace-up neckline to pique consumer interest.

I must have a dozen black slacks in my wardrobe so instead of the ubiquitous corporate staple, try a fun cut and color like this relaxed pair of hunter green trousers or even blue or red ones! You’d be surprised how color can easily transition into a “neutral” when combined with effortless black tops.

Rules to Live By

Since we’re discussing work wear keep in mind the following:

1. Nothing too revealing
Cleavage and crop tops are a definite NO-NO! (Did I really need to say that?)

2. Keep makeup minimal
Studies show that women who wear a bit of makeup (Mascara, eyeliner, blush, lipstick) are taken more seriously than those who don’t. It shows your prospective audience that you considered how you presented yourself and made a bit of effort.

3. Make a statement
Whether it’s with a red lip, a pop of color, or a cool pattern (in my case- always animal print!),
Give them something to remember and it makes it impossible for them to forget.

We creatives can attest to the joy of dressing for the workplace.
Clients expect a little more imagination than customary in an office environment.
More patterns, more prints, more visual interest because the industry simply calls for it.

But whether or not you’re working in a creative environment I say to hell with the boring corporate looks and LIVE OUT LOUD will ya?  Life is just SO much more dazzling in color.

  3. YES dude! Life is much more dazzling in color. I have to say though-- where are you in these photos? I'm trying to figure it out but I can't place that palm lined avenue. I am currently working a very blah between college job, and honestly, do not try hard enough to make my self look presentable for work. Yet I am not within a creative field yet, so I don't necessarily have to look that good. Although, there is such a thrill and confidence that you receive from dressing up for work. It just exudes that something. These are excellent tips btw, and I especially love your first outfit! xx

    1. I'm in Anaheim babe, this neighborhood is not too far from Disneyland ;D
I totally feel ya as well, I used to work corporate and did NOT dress up at all to work which resulted in me always feeling so dumpy and unproductive! A little makeup and effort works wonders for your mood~

  4. You look smoking hot dear, everything mentioned here is true. Love the black lace and your styling!

    1. Thank you Mercy! I've been loving dainty tops and trousers lately!

  6. These tips are really good, I will try and remember to have some sort of statement piece next time I have a job interview so that I'm more memorable in the crowd. I love your bag.
